  1. I really enjoyed the Felix trilogy, a genuinely gripping adventure series reminiscent of Robert Louis Stevenson or J Meade Falkner’s Moonfleet. It was more serious than much of Joan’s children’s fiction but still had many of the familiar Aiken motifs that made it recognisably hers. Lovely to be reminded of its origins. My reviews of all three titles are here.

    • So pleased you have linked your reviews here – a very useful resource with lots of great background material – I just re-read them with pleasure! And she definitely owes a debt to R.L.Stevenson and other rip-roaring reads of her own youth!
